Carcassonne is a great base to explore the land of the Cathars. A short drive from the coast you can also reach the Pyrenees and Andorra is nearby.Holidaying in the Languedoc and Ariege also offers sporting activities such as Kayaking, Caving and mountaineering.

Carcassonne, the walled City is a world heritage site and there are plenty of local events.Jousting, music festivals and plenty of tourist attractions make sure that you will return from your holidays with good memories.

Close by there are lakes for swimming and boating.Lac de Cavayere, Pradelle in the Montagne Noire and Lac de Montbell all offer a chance to escape into the country and swim in cool clear lakes.

The holiday house is owned by a French couple who will always give you a warm and traditional welcome. During your stay they can be contacted for help, and they love to share their considerable knowledge of local history, culture and the best places to eat and drink.They will also help you plan your holiday travels around the Languedoc and the South of France.

The airport is just 10 minutes drive away.You may also fly into Toulouse ( 90 kms), Narbonne ( 60 kms ) or Barcelona ( 270 kms).Car hire at the airport, is easy and can be arranged at reasonable prices. Vernet- Les-Bains.

Not only does this show you the town on the shoulder of the Canigou massif but it also explains what you can expect if you plan a day out on the Yellow train. As an added bonus there is also a photo ring for the Abbey St Martin . This ancient abbey is built on the hillside above Vernet les Bains and is surrounded by an old hardwood forest with wonderful views.

Roman aquaduct and Les Orgues.

The ancient aquaduct near Ansignan is still working. You can sit on the top of the aquaduct and feel the clear cool water flow over your hands..just as it did 2,000 years ago.Just over 1 hours drive from our holiday house.The area around here is very dry and the hillsides are covered with old gnarled trees. Very easy to lose yourself and to forget which century it is!

Lastours

A local Cathar castle, or more correctly 4 of them set very close together and only 20 minutes from our holiday house in Carcassonne.The walk up to the castles is dramatic and the scenary wonderful.If you want to find out more about the Cathars then check out these pages.

A walk around Lac de Cavayere.

A beautiful man made lake with supervised bathing and lovely beaches. Now called Carcassonne plage it is very convenient and only 15 minutes drive from our holiday cottage.
