Limoux.
About 30 kms to the south of Carcassonne is Limoux. The town is on both banks of the river Aude and has a good
market on Fridays.
Between near year and easter there is an ongoing festival in celebration of the ancient Occitan language.
The town is also very well known for the sparkling white
wine made from the grapes of the surrounding vinyards. You will often see it as Blanquette de Limoux and Limoux proudly claims to be the oldest sparkling wine area
in the world.
To quote from the Rough Guide to Languedoc
"Today Limoux is quiet and has something of an air of neglected decay, but at least it provides an opportunity
to stretch your legs on the way to the Pyrenees"
