What to do in Carcassonne if you do not have a car?

We often have guests who come for a simple and value for money holiday. They book a low cost flight with Ryan air, take the airport bus to the central station and then take the 5 minute walk alongside the canal du midi to the house.

For talking to guests we reckon that there is around 4 days worth of good choice. For instance:-

Day 1. Walk up to La Cite. It takes between 30 and 45 minutes to cross the Canal, walk through the Old Town and then climb the cobbled street up to the walled City. It is easy to pass hours exploring the narrow streets, eating in the restaurants, visiting the old church and watching the jousting displays. Our favourite time is during the cooler evenings but this is a popular destination and really you could spend all day up here.

Day 2. The old town itself with the flower market, cafes and stalls will take up at least half a day. Then you can book a trip on one of the canal boats and admire the views as you drift along the canal.

Day 3. Cycling along the tow path beside the canal du midi is very popular. You can hire a bike in the old town, take a packed lunch and just explore. You can't get lost, the path provides flat and easy riding. A great day out.

Day 4. The central station is only 5 minutes walk and there are regular trains so why not have day out. You could easily travel to one of the larger provincial towns like Narbonne, Montpelier or Toulouse.

What about shopping when you do not have a car?

All the provisions which you will need are available in the town.
