Lac de Cavayere

A man-made lake covering 18 hectares.Often called Carcassonne plage it is a just outside the small village of Montlegun on the outskirts of Carcassonne.

Three brooks feed into the lake and these help form the distinctive inlets and shallows. It was built behind a dam (23 m in height) after local fires badly damaged the area back in 1985.

This beautiful expanse of water is home to an abundance of wildlife and fish. The designated swimming areas are supervised by qualified life guards during the high season, and there are special roped areas for young children and less confident swimmers. It takes approximately 1 hour to enjoy a walk around Lac de Cavayere, or why not simply sit back and watch the boats, pedallos, fishermen and the occasional family outing by the nesting duck population?

Lac de Cavayereis a haven for young families holidaying in the Languedoc.

The pebbled beaches are scrupulously clean and well supervised. The initial slope on the lake floor is shallow, making it ideal for lakeside games or simply splashing around! For more confident swimmers there is ample scope for avoiding those extra holiday pounds as you plough through the crystal clear waters!

Ice cream and soft drinks are available in the afternoon. The local visitors don't usually start to arrive until around 3.30 to 4.00pm, so the early afternoons can be especially quiet even on a busy weekend in August!

This special lake is only 10 minutes drive from the holiday cottage.

In 2004  the local authorities have changed the signposts to Cavayere and now refer to it as Carcassonne Plage. It is also worth mentioning that the small village of Montlegun is nearby and this is also well signposted.
