Ornithology in the Languedoc and Ariege

Ornithology

The two main areas for ornithologists are the Coast and the Mountains.

On the coast the most familiar bird is the Flamingo with its main breeding grounds in the Camargue. There is a brief selection of websites below. The first site by Jeremy Josephs shows the passion and dedication these wonderful birds can create in people. The other sites provide pictures and more background.

ARIEGE

The Ariege.com website is a great site for finding out about the area. In particular the web pages showing the work of Dave Watts, a professional photographer, help to show the variety of wildlife in this wonderful part of France.

Within the same site there are also monthly wildlife reports from Graham Hart. For instance try this web page.

Midi Libre on 24th July 2004 reported that brown bears ( ours bruns ) were being successfully reintroduced to the Pyrenees. Re settlement began in 2000. As expected the paper reports problems with local farmers worried about live stock losses

Do you need help when planning bird watching trips abroad? Interested in contacting other bird watches? If so we recommend that you check out the Fat birder site. The following quote from the site says much about the philosophy and thoughts behind it's creation

The Fatbirder website is an attempt to put as many birders in touch with each other throughout the world as possible to encourage friendship and conservation.
