The Capcir

The Capcir is reached at Mont Louis. It is in the high meadows before the Cerdagne and runs northwards with the aude as it flows down towards the plains via Axat and Quillan.

To the East the Capcir runs into the Tet valley ( or Conflent) towards Villefranche. It is this valley which is followed by the yellow train

Mont Louis ( Mont Louis station from the yellow train) holds a very strategic position and was fortified in the 17th century by Vauban.

Just after Mont Louis you approach La Llagonne. This is a mountain village with roofs of slate or lloses. The local church has a romanesque statue of Christ.

The road leads on to the Quiallne pass which has a family ski resort. After another 10 kms you come to Les Angles ski resort ( built in the 1960's) on the Matemale Lake. This is a top ski resort in winter.

In les Angles there is an animal park with a walk of 3 kms to view the wild life.

Formigueres is 5 kms further. It also has a ski slope.

Fontrabiouse is at the border with the Aude.It also has grottos with stalactites and stalagmites.

Just after Mont Louis on the D60 is the beautiful Boullouses Lake.

Whilst the Cerdagne has the high mountains to offer shelter from the north wind the Capcir is much more exposed. The climate is much more grim.
